Oct 2007 : Sri Lanka lost the ODI Series against England 2-3.

Nov 2007 : Marvan Atapattu, who was dropped by the selectors after he refused to meet them, was later included in the test squad following the intervention by Sports Minister, Gamini Lokuge.

Test Series against Australia :

1st Test – Sri Lanka’s first innings were a flop as they were bowled out for 211 in response to a huge Australian total of 551/4d. But, in the second, they piled up 300 mainly thanks to a solid 82 from Michael Vandort. But, other batsmen fail to make an impression and they lose the test by an innings and 40 runs.

Talk about Muppets and Puppets : Marvan Atapattu top scored in the first innings with 51 in his return to Test cricket after a lapse of 2 years. Following this, he spoke to the media and criticized the selectors saying that “Sri Lanka cricket is not going the way it should be because it is a set of muppets headed by a joker.” However, frank he may be in his claim, while some applauded his courage to speak out, being a former Captain, his behavior was received with displeasure by others.

2nd Test – In reply to Australia’s 542/5 in the first innings, Sri Lanka got only 246, with the larger roles played by Mahela Jayawardene who hit his 19th test century and Kumar Sangakkara who made 57. Having to make a huge 507 to win the test match in the fourth innings, yet Sri Lanka didn’t give up hope. Marvan Atapattu made a sound 80, in what was to be his last test innings, Sanath Jayasuriya, a somewhat 45 and Sangakkara, an extremely beautiful 192, before being bowled out for 410. Sangakkara, who was in a mission to single handedly win the test, took to the strong Australian bowling attack to hit a strokeful 192, his 3rd consecutive 150+score. At 364/9, a ball that hit his shoulder was caught by Ricky Ponting off Stuart Clark. Following the player appeals, Umpire Rudy Koertzen most wrongly ruled him out. Although he had apologized to Sangakkara soon afterwards, by such an unacceptable decision, he not only ended any hopes Sri Lanka had of an outstanding series levelling victory, but also cut short a double century, Sangakkara really deserved.

Post Match : Marvan Atapattu announced his retirement from International Cricket.

Atapattu, who made his Test debut against India at Chandigarh in 1990 was an elegant batsman, one of the most technically accurate players of the game. He made 16 centuries, out of which, 6 were double centuries. Together with Sanath Jayasuriya, the pair formed the most successful opening combination for Sri Lanka. He played 90 Tests, averaging 39.02 with a career best of 249.

He was equally successful in one-dayers, hitting 11 hundreds and 59 fifties. With more than 8000 ODI runs to his name, he also captained the team from 2003 to early 2005, until an injury forced him to be out of cricket for sometime.

After a continous row with the current selectors, especially for not giving him a single game at the 2007 World Cup, he hit out at the selectors halfway between the Australia series. After the match, he announced his retirement from international cricket and joined the controversial ICL.

“Marvelous Marvan” was a great player for Sri Lanka over the years, one that no doubt would be missed, but the respect he earned as a Sri Lankan player has been marred by his recent comments against the selectors, and that too in a foreign country.

Nevertheless, We Wish Marvan Samson Atapattu a great future !

Sri Lanka’s national selectors have decided to drop middle-order batsman and excellent fielder, Tillekeratne Dilshan from the squad touring Australia, next month for a two match Test Series, while ‘A’ team captain, Thilan Samaraweera has earned a recall to the side. Samaraweera, who has virtually struggled in away conditions, played the last of his 39 Tests against England in 2006. He has five centuries to his credit, all of which were scored at home. Dilshan in the mean time will captain the ‘A’ team in their Zimbabwe tour.

Former Captain, Marvan Atapattu, who did not show up for the meeting with SLC officials few days ago, have been excluded from the squad and will be replaced by veteran Sanath Jayasuriya. Jayasuriya was not to tour Australia this time, if the experienced Atapattu had accepted to play.

In addition, uncapped left-arm seamer, Chanaka Welagedara, who had a fantastic time with the ball in the Gopalan Trophy last week, have finally been included in the Test Squad. Jehan Mubarak, who is going well in the One-day format these days has also been named.

Ace Spinner, Muttiah Muralitharan, who is set to take over Shane Warne’s record in one of the two tests, is still recovering from a biceps injury which prevented him from playing in the World Twenty20 as well as the first three matches of England series.

Leg spinning all-rounder Malinga Bandara has been picked ahead of another spinning allrounder Kaushal Lokuarachchi.

The first Test will be played in Brisbane from November 8-12 and the second Test in Hobart from November 16-20.

Former captain Marvan Atapattu will be left out from the Sri Lanka squad to tour Australia in November following his unprofessional approach towards the national selectors and Sri Lanka Cricket. The 36 year old elegant right hander was set to meet Cricket Board officials and the national selectors at a special meeting at the SLC headquarters yesterday to decide his future career.

But chairman national selectors Ashantha de Mel said that Atapattu had badly let them down by informing the SLC that he is unable to turn up for the meeting at the eleventh hour.

De Mel said that they wanted to discuss matters regarding Atapattu’s availability for the tour down under as earlier he refused to play after being selected for the home Test series against Bangladesh.

Atapattu has scored 16 Test hundreds but has not featured in international level since February. Asantha de Mel said that Atapattu’s presence would have been important in the team especially with his technique and temperament to stay in.

But De Mel said that this time Atapattu has acted in an unkindly manner and his committee did not have any hesitation in replacing him with Sanath Jayasuriya in the Test squad to tour Australia.

He was sidelined by a back injury in 2006 leading to the appointment of Mahela Jayawardene as captain. Jayawardene quickly secured the position permanently by leading his team to a 5-0 one-day series triumph in England.

Atapattu made the last of his Test centuries against New Zealand in April 2005 and he last reached three figures in one-day internationals way back in October 2004.

Sri Lanka’s veteran opening batsman and former Captain, Marvan Atapattu has requested a release from his central contract of SL Cricket, which runs till March 2008. His request has been accepted by SL Cricket’s administrative Committee. Although, he has not provided clear reasons for this request, it seems that his name is linked with the newly installed, Indian Cricket League.

It is likely that the 36yr old veteran, who nears retirement will join the rebel league, which means it could make a halt to Atapattu’s 17yr old international career. Atapattu made his Test Debut against India in 1990. He made his ODI debut, also against India, in the same year. The elegant right-hander, is one of the few players who has hit 5 or more double tons in Test Cricket.

SL Cricket is taking a wait-and-watch approach towards the ICL, and it is possible that they will take a hardline towards the players who will join the league.

Apart from Atapattu, sources indicate that Master Blaster, Sanath Jayasuriya, has also been offered a US$ 500, 000 contract, but it is highly unlikely that the dashing allrounder will accept the offer.

The Bangladesh national cricket team captained by young Mohammed Ashraful arrived in Sri Lanka recently. Bangladesh and Sri Lanka will play three tests and three ODIs beginning June 25. At a press conference organized to welcome the Bangladesh team, Sri Lankan captain Mahela Jayawardene said that this was a good chance for the grooming youngsters. He also said that Bangladesh should not be taken lightly, emphasizing that they have improved a lot since they last met in a Test in 2005.

Marvan Atapattu is likely to play his first Test for Sri Lanka in nearly 18 months later this month when Bangladesh arrive for a series of three Tests and three ODIs. Atapattu has been a near-permanent presence in most squads but has played little part in Sri Lanka’s recent resurgence.

He was part of the World Cup squad but failed to get a game in the Caribbean. That may be about to change now, with Ashantha De Mel, chief selector, backing Atapattu’s return. “Marvan Atapattu will definitely be considered for the Test and the one day series against Bangladesh,” said De Mel.

I think Marvan is too good a player to be left out considering his experience and ability. We will initially look at him for the Tests and, depending on his form, will consider him for the one-day games too. He was left out of the matches against Pakistan in Abu Dhabi, but we have decided to reconsider him,” he added.

One veteran who might not be part of the action is Sanath Jayasuriya, De Mel suggesting that he may get a well-deserved break. “We have also taken a decision to rest some of the seniors for this series. It is very likely that Sanath Jayasuriya will be rested. Sanath is a player of undisputed class and he is in no danger of losing his place. He can afford to rest and come back.

“We will take the opportunity to try our new players who are on the fringe of breaking through as we feel Bangladesh is a side we can afford to experiment against.”

De Mel also confirmed that Muttiah Muralitharan, Kumar Sangakkara and Chaminda Vaas, currently in England playing county cricket, will be available for the home series.
